Admiral Gregory G. Johnson

Retired U.S. Navy Admiral Gregory G.
"Grog" Johnson grew up in the tiny Aroostook County town of Westmanland
and graduated from UMaine in1968. After receiving a UMaine degree, Adm.
Johnson launched a 36-year military career that saw him rise to the rank
of four-start admiral, the highest level of command in the U.S. Navy.
His military assignments included Senior Military Assistant to the
Secretary of Defense, Commander of Carrier Group Eight/USS Theodore
Roosevelt and Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Staff. In 2001 he
was appointed Commander, U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa, and
Commander in Chief, Allied (NATO) Forces Southern Europe. Since his
military retirement, Adm. Johnson has served his alma mater tirelessly,
through membership on UMaine's Board of visitors, through service as
chair of the President’s Alumni Engagement Task Force and through
numerous other alumni volunteer and community leadership activities.
