Susan Lambrecht Smith is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dr. Lambrecht Smith's interests encompass both theoretical underpinnings of reading disabilities, and applied research with children at risk for reading disorders. The former of these interests centers around explaining the role of phonological representation with respect to differences between children who have expressive language disorders and dyslexia. Currently, Dr. Lambrecht Smith is involved in a project exploring phonological patterns in the emergent lexicons of children who later have been diagnosed with dyslexia. She is a member of a team of researchers in the eastern United States who are engaged in a longitudinal effort examining "precursors to dyslexia". Additionally, Dr. Lambrecht Smith is engaged in collaborations with clinical faculty examining the efficacy of targeted short-term phonological intervention for preschool-age children at risk for reading disabilities.
