Which amenities are
provided in residence halls, such as towels, sheets, soap, toilet paper, maid
service, laundry facilities, telephones, etc.?
Linen service is included in the room
rates; towels, blankets, sheets, and pillows are provided.
Maid service is provided every
day except Sunday. Towels are changed daily. Bedding can be exchanged at the
reception desk on the fourth day. Youth rates are available with limited
service. Cube ice is available without charge at the front desk in the residence
halls. Laundry facilities are located in the basement of each residence hall.
Each dormitory room has a telephone for local area calling and credit card
calls. Telephones are also located in the hallway on every wing and floor of the
residence halls. There is one pay telephone on each floor in addition to the
local phones.
Are the residence halls air
conditioned?
No, because the Maine summers, for the
most part, do not require it. It is recommended to bring a fan whenever
possible.
Are there any
particularly nice rooms with private baths that might be used for VIPs?
There are a few suites available which can be used by
special guests or VIPs. They do have private baths, but are not
air-conditioned.
What are regulations
regarding smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages in residence halls?
Maine State Law prohibits smoking in
public areas. Smoking is not allowed in the common areas of any residence hall
or other university facility. These areas include hallways, bathrooms, lounges
and other shared spaces. Smoking is a sensitive issue in UMaine residence
halls. Although certain sections have been designated as nonsmoking, smoke
often permeates into hallways and entrances. The following guidelines should be
followed regarding smoking in the residence halls:
-
When a smoker lives with a
nonsmoker, the nonsmoker's rights will be honored and viewed as the priority.
-
Smokers should dispose of all
smoking materials appropriately and not on the grounds, Smokers must
extinguish smoking materials in non-flammable containers such as a metal of
glass ashtray. Students and conference guests are expected to be sure all
smoking materials are completely extinguished before adding such materials to
the trash.
-
Students and conference guests
who smoke or allow guests to smoke are expected to properly dispose of smoking
materials and may be held responsible for improperly extinguished smoking
materials.
It is against the law and
university policy for minors (under the legal drinking age of 21 years in the
State of Maine) to possess, sell, procure, or consume alcohol. It is illegal
and against university policy for any person of the legal drinking age to
consume alcoholic beverages in a common area. Certain areas in residence halls
and other university facilities may be designated for a party, dance or other
amusement with alcohol for people of the legal age.
Are there any light
kitchen facilities?
Each of the residence halls has a small
kitchenette either in the basement or at some other location within the
building. The Doris Twitchell Allen Village and the Edith Patch House complexes
have a complete kitchen in each suite which consists of three or four bedrooms,
a living room and two bathrooms, one with a shower stall and sink, the other
with a toilet and sink. Both bathrooms have electrical outlets and mirrors.
Cooking utensils, kitchenware and dinnerware are not provided.
