The University of Maine Counseling Center, a full-range mental health
facility, provides services and programs that promote the personal development and
psychological well-being of University of Maine students. The Counseling Center also seeks
to assist in the development and maintenance of a university atmosphere conducive to
growth and that maximizes students' educational achievements.
In order to accomplish the above goals, the Counseling Center offers
counseling and psychotherapy from a variety of theoretical orientations, and provides a
wide array of mental health services to the campus community. Services include:
- individual, couples, and group therapy
- psychological and career testing
- educational programs and outreach activities
- crisis intervention and emergency services
- consultation and training
- psychiatric services
Improving academic skills, learning to better communicate, strengthening a
relationship--these are common outcomes for students who come into the Counseling Center.
Coming to the Counseling Center is often a step in the right direction when dealing with
the frustrations, loneliness, anxiety, and sometimes depression associated with the
college experience. Sometimes one might just have a vague feeling that things are not
going as they should. In any case, talking with a professional can be helpful.
Eligibility
Individual services are available to University of Maine students taking six (6) or more
credits. Both full and part-time students are eligible for groups. Although faculty,
staff, and administration are encouraged to use the Counseling Center for outreach
programs and consultation, individual services for University of Maine employees are
provided by the Employee Assistance Program (581-4014).
Limits of Service
Though the University of Maine Counseling Center is primarily a short-term agency, staff
can assist in exploring options if extended service is needed. Client concerns that
involve more intensive care, certain specialization or hospitalization may be referred to
mental health providers in the community.
Appointments
Initial, non-emergency appointments are usually within one week of the request. To
make an appointment, or to learn more about the available services, call (207) 581-1392 or
stop by the Counseling Center. We're located on the Gannett side of Cutler Health
Center. Our hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Cost
There is no charge for psychological services for students currently enrolled in the
qualifying amount of credit hours (6 credits or more). There is, however, a fee for
psychiatric consultation. Students carrying less than 6 credits are eligible for
group counseling, consultation and educational programs.

Communication within the Counseling Center is confidential. Contact made with the
Counseling Center and information resulting from individual sessions, does not become a
part of ones student record. Such information can be released only with the written
