Internships: Dalhousie University

Dalhousie Bachelor of Commerce Co-op Program

Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia offers a four-year mandatory Bachelor of Commerce Co-operative Education degree. In order to graduate, students must complete three four-month work terms.

Dalhousie faculty work with students to ensure they are ready for the work force and to identify experiences where they can apply their academic knowledge in a work environment. Each term, students indicate an interest in working internationally. A number of our students who will be available for work this summer have indicated an interest in working in Maine in the fields of marketing, public relations, finance and accounting.

Our current employers find hiring co-op students an effective way to complete short-term project work and to bring fresh, new ideas to the table. In the field of marketing, our employers hire students to perform a variety of functions. Our students have participated in the creative, production and media briefing processes, implemented direct marketing and sales programs, tracked competitive information and historical files, assisted in the design, development and upgrading of marketing materials, researched marketing opportunities and conducted market feasibility studies and sales analysis while managing client relationships and ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget.

In the fields of finance and accounting, our students have been allowed the opportunity to make financial projections, develop spreadsheets for financial modeling purposes, analyze financial statements, perform auditing work, manage accounts payable and receivable, research tax parameters and policies and stock valuations and perform sector and company specific research.

An overwhelming majority of our employers state that they would rehire their student employees for another work term or for a full-time job. They consistently credit our students with their ability to learn new concepts and multi-task while working in a fast-paced environment. Our students require minimal supervision, possess job-ready skills, and are energetic and enthusiastic. They are trained to deliver results quickly and efficiently.
