Student FAQs
Is it too late to sign up for the UMaine student insurance?
The open enrollment periods are September and January for the UMaine student health insurance plan for accidents and illness. If insurance is needed outside the open enrollment periods, check out the COBRA coverage under your current plan or short-term insurance coverage at your local agent or through Cross Insurance 207.537.6444 or Cross Agency.
The UMaine insurance (underwritten by Nationwide) mentions a preferred and non-preferred provider? What is the difference and will my insurance cover both types?
Preferred providers are affiliated with Healthcare Value Management / CCN. They will submit your claim forms automatically so you don't have to worry about it. Non-preferred providers do not have contracts with HCRM so you have to submit your own claim forms when you see one of these providers.
Yes, the insurance will cover both of these. It is just a matter of how much they will cover. Generally the insurance will cover a preferred provider at a higher percentage than a non-preferred provider. Coverage information is summarized in the insurance brochure.
I have the UMaine health insurance plan and I just received a bill from Cutler Health. I thought my insurance should pay? There are several reasons why you may have received a bill:
- The services received at Cutler Health may not be covered by the insurance. These are generally preventive care such as immunizations, eye care, allergy shots, and physical exams. If you are interested in receiving these services for free, please see our Cutler Care Package.Your enrollment in the student insurance plan does not show on our billing records. Please call the CHC at 207.581.4000 or email us through RelayHealth so we can correct the error.
- If you have UMaine International Insurance you must send in your insurance ready bill to Bollinger to be reimbursed. We cannot process Bollinger claims.

Do I need to pay the Bursar for my pharmacy copay or health care received at Cutler Health Center?
You may pay CHC at the time of your visit or you can pay the Bursar's Office at a later date.
I have the UMaine health insurance. On the claim form where it says attending physician's statement do I need to have the attending physician fill that out? No, instead attach your insurance ready bill from the physician's office.
Finally, whom do I mail this to?

There is a charge on my Bursar's account for the student health insurance. I took it out kind of late in the fall and so it won't be paid until I get my loans for this coming semester. I haven't filed any claims against it and, feeling especially broke, I am wondering if I can just cancel it and have the charge taken off my bill?
The cost of insurance is non-refundable whether you have used it or not. Even though you have not paid your bill, the Bursar's Office has paid the insurance company for your enrollment. We do hope that you continue in good health and never have to use the policy but it is a good protection should you need it.
I am a student at UMaine, and I would like to get information on family coverage as well as for myself. I would like to know the rates, coverage, etc. I have a wife, and a child.
You can check out our student coverage for January 1, 2008 through August 31, 2008. The cost will be $1,293 plus $2,456 for one dependent, $5,316 for two or more. Before purchasing dependent insurance, you must have purchased the student insurance plan. The dependent insurance can be added on to your policy via Cross Agency. For more information contact umainestudentinsurance@crossagency.com. Or 800.537.6444 and speak with Lisa Farrington.
What is the health insurance offered by UMaine to graduate students?
The policy is the same as for undergraduate students. Check with the graduate school if you have an assistantship.
