Study Aides  |  A Word from the DoAA

A Word from the DAA, Director of Academic Affairs
Our DAA, Benjamin Sweeney, is in charge of of the Gamma Nu Academic Program. He sets the minimum GPA and helps those that are having troubles in their classes.

DAA Academic Program

Minimum GPA:

The minimum GPA for Gamma Nu Chapter is a 2.40 for all brothers.

 Interviews:

The Director of Academic Affairs is held responsible to have 3 interviews per semester with each of the brothers.  There will be one interview at the start of the semester, one in the middle of the semester, and one at the end of the semester.  Each of the interviews will cover different topics.

The first interview will be to get the interviewee’s feelings on the semester ahead.  The DAA will get a feel of the difficulty level of the classes and course load.  It is a way to find out whether any actions need to be taken in helping the brothers get through a difficult course.  As well as discern the brotherhood’s study habits.

The second interview is similar to that of a progress report.  In this interview the DAA will find out how each of the brothers are doing thus far.  If the brothers feel they are slipping behind, the DAA will try to help them get their grades up.  This is also the interview where the DAA finds out if the brothers have any requests or recommendations for the DAA.

The third interview is the closing interview for the semester.  In this interview the DAA can find out how each brother feels they did in each of their classes.  If they feel they did poorly they can tell the DAA why this is the case.  At this interview the DAA will also collect tests from the brothers for the test bank.

 Presentation:

The DAA will be responsible for one presentation per semester.  The DAA will decide what the presentation will cover after the 1st interview.  Then, the DAA will write up a presentation, and schedule it to happen during one of the regular weekly meetings with the President.

 Class Skipping:

This will be a program worked around the honor system.  Every time a brother skips a class they must drop a quarter into the jar.  The jar will be passed around every meeting.  At the end of the semester the amount of money in the jar will be used for a scholarship.

 Scholarships:

Scholarships will be determined by the alumni that wish to make donations.  For every $300 dollars donated by alumni, that money will be used as a scholarship with the alumni’s name on it.

The DAA will also be responsible for looking for possible scholarships that the brothers could be eligible for.  This includes Delta Tau Delta national scholarships, as well as local school scholarships.

There will also be an attendance/GPA scholarship which is created from the Class Skipping Jar.  If a brother attends all of his classes in a given semester he will receive this scholarship.  If there are multiple brothers that do this, the tie breaker will be the person with the highest GPA that semester.  If the GPAs are the same, the scholarship will be split in half and given to both of them

 Academic Acknowledgment:

Every two weeks the DAA will acknowledge one or two brothers for the academic achievements.  The DAA will change the type of acknowledgement every week so that it will not be monotonous.

 Test Bank:

The Director of Academic Affairs will be in charge of holding a test bank that has been complied by the brotherhood.  He will also be in charge of lending tests out to brothers for photocopying.  If they do not wish to photocopy the test, the Director of Academic Affairs will schedule an appointment with them so they can study off the test in his presence.

However the test bank has taken a step towards the digital age.  With the assistance of some brothers, a majority of the tests have been scanned, converted to adobe acrobat files, and placed on the university's server to a folder which is only accessible to Delts.  The hard copies of the tests are still available if necessary from the DAA.

 Sanctions:

If any brother falls below the given GPA in the Delta Tau Delta Gamma Nu Chapter Bylaws, the DAA will be responsible for having an interview with that brother.  In this interview the DAA must find out why the brother’s GPA fell below the standard.

If the DAA feels that the brother put forth an honest effort he may make the sanctions as lenient as he feels is fair.  If he feels that the brother in question did not put forth an honest effort he may also make reasonably difficult sanctions focused on raising the brother’s GPA.

If any brother given a sanction feels it is an unfair sanction, they may bring their case before the honor board, and the honor board will either agree with the DAA’s sanction, or make one of their own choosing.
