UMaine houses a number of pilot production plants and demonstration facilities both on campus in Orono and around the state that can help companies with the development of prototypes, troubleshooting projects, and small-scale pilot production. Trained technicians and staff are on-site to facilitate projects and to provide any necessary resources.

Some of the pilot production facilities available are:

• Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center (composites, structural materials, wood products)
• Advanced Manufacturing Center (precision manufacturing)
• Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin (land-based aquaculture)
• Food Science Pilot Plant (all types of food products, includes a sensory testing facility)
• Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology (sensors, microelectronics, thin films, nanotechnology)
• New Media Time Lab (digital content, new media)
• Pulp and Paper Process Development Center (pulp and paper)
• Advanced Computing Research Lab (supercomputer for modeling and analysis)

This office can match companies with the appropriate expertise and facilities on campus. While pilot production involves fees for time and materials, UMaine has partnered with several companies and entrepreneurs who have received seed funding for pilot productions from the Maine Technology Institute.
