Beans and Greens Logo

Our vegetarian program is called Beans & Greens, and vegetarian and vegan items are identified on our food labels.

  • Foods labeled vegetarian do not contain any animal-based products with the exception of eggs and dairy.
  • Foods labeled vegan do not contain any animal-derived products. (Note: some of our vegan items MAY contain sugar.)

Organic food-lovers will find many selections at Hilltop and York, including

  • Organic tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Brown rice
  • Marinara sauce
  • Yogurt,
  • Select produce and much more
  • Organic Borealis Breads®, which use locally grown organic wheat, can be found at the Maine Marketplace and in many Bear Essentials selections.

To ensure that your vegetarian diet contains adequate energy and nutrients:

  • Include "meat alternates" in your diet, such as soy products and other legumes - a vegetarian who exists on pasta and grilled cheese sandwiches will probably be missing out on many healthful nutrients.
  • Keep your intake of sweets and saturated fats to a minimum.
  • Choose whole or unrefined grains instead of refined products whenever possible; use fortified enriched cereal products.
  • Eat a wide variety of deep-colored fruits and vegetables, including a good source of vitamin C (needed to absorb iron from plant foods, especially iron-fortified breakfast cereals).
  • Vegans should have a reliable source of vitamin B-12, such as a fortified breakfast cereal, soy beverage, or cyanocobalamin supplement.
  • If milk is not consumed, a calcium + vitamin D supplement may be needed.
