The Department of Earth Sciences conducts a balance of teaching, research and service as part of the University of Maine Land Grant and Sea Grant missions.
Our primary goal is to develop better understanding of Earth as a complex and dynamic system, including how humans interact with Earth’s environments, hazards and resources. Read more about the mission of the Department of Earth Sciences.
The University of Maine was founded in 1865 for the purpose of training students in Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. It graduated its first class in 1872. Since this beginning, subjects in earth science, for example, general geology, soil chemistry and mineralogy, were taught by various professors.
