Program

The College emphasizes a diverse liberal arts background, academic specialization, professional training and field experiences to prepare teachers who are outstanding practitioners and enthusiastic role models for lifelong learning. Students admitted to the College’s Teacher Candidacy program at the end of their sophomore year have proven their commitment to the profession through self-initiated field experiences and academic performance. The College’s teacher candidates, in partnership with area schools, work, learn and apply theory to practice under the shared guidance and expertise of practicing teachers and college professors.

Students document their learning and professional growth through the development of a portfolio, which serves as a valuable self-marketing asset.

Areas of concentration for Elementary (grades K-8) teachers include: art, Canadian studies, disability studies, environmental education, English, French, German, social studies, honors, human development, international affairs, mathematics, music, Native American studies, life/physical sciences, peace and reconciliation studies, performing arts, philosophy, psychology, Spanish, women’s studies, sociology and liberal arts.

The College’s teacher preparation programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. After successfully completing university and program requirements, graduates are recommended for provisional teaching certificates in the state of Maine. National accreditation helps pave the way for reciprocal certification in other states.
