Master of Education in Instructional Technology
[-Back to Graduate Programs-]

Three instructors use an iBook and digital cameraThe M.Ed. in Instructional Technology is designed to the need for graduate-level training in effective, innovative use of current and emerging technology in Maine's K-12 schools. The required coursework, research and clinical experiences are directed at producing highly marketable educational leaders who can build school capacity to continually assess and upgrade the technology available to teachers and students.

The M.Ed. in Instructional Technology program is informed and guided by state and national standards, including the Maine Learning Results and the Standards for Technology in Teaching and Learning published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). ISTE is an affiliate of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The 36-credit hour program is offered evenings during the school year and through the summer to meet the schedules of full-time professional educators. Courses are offered statewide, both on-line and through instruction at various sites around Maine.

Student Outcomes:
• Enhance learning in K-12 classrooms by integrating knowledge of learning and teaching with knowledge of educational technology, media and instructional methods

• Apply and evaluate applications of technology to specific instructional situations and develop materials and strategies needed to enhance learning

• Plan, implement and evaluate mediated instructional and educational technology delivery systems based on knowledge of research

• Evaluate existing instructional technology hardware and software resources in a school or school district and plan, implement and evaluate changes needed to heighten teaching and learning

Research:
Action research is a component of the program. Action research, grounded in the tradition of applied research can be defined as:

A research investigation conducted at the local level by school staff, parents, or students which involves the collection of data about specific education problems or programs, reflection on the information acquired, development of conclusions and adjustment of the program.

Courses in the M.ED in Instructional Technology program will highlight the importance of action research in order to increase educators’ own understanding of their practice.

Clinical Experience/Practicum
Since it is anticipated that most people in the program will be working in a Maine school setting, a supervised practicum will be conducted at their work site. Students who are not employed in a K-12 classroom will be placed in a school. Typically, the practicum is completed during the last semester of the student’s enrollment. The practicum encompasses a major project that addresses a critical problem or issue related to instructional technology.
