Praxis I
Undergraduate students must pass each section of Praxis I prior to
applying for teacher candidacy status. Your scores will be included in
your portfolio which is submitted for acceptance before entering upper
level classes. Please take the test early enough to allow for re-takes
if necessary to pass the Reading, Math, and Writing (grammar and essay)
tests.
Students applying to a master’s level program in education may be required
to include passing Praxis I scores in their application process. Discuss
this with your department faculty when inquiring about the program of
interest.
Students applying to transfer into any major within the College of
Education and Human Development must have a minimum 2.5 GPA from an
accredited institution or other college within The University of Maine.
Students applying to transfer into a teacher education program (i.e.,
elementary education, secondary education, or KPE/teaching option)
should be aware of additional requirements of those majors. After being
admitted to the College of Education and Human Development as a major in
a teacher education program, students will be required to complete a
teacher candidacy portfolio that includes passing the PRAXIS I
examination. Students may not begin to take upper level professional
courses until approval of their Teacher Candidacy Portfolio. For this
reason, teacher education applicants are strongly encouraged to take and
pass the PRAXIS I examination prior to applying for transfer
admission if they have 45 credits or more.
Praxis II
Students doing their internship Fall 2005 will be required to
take Praxis II by November 30th but will not be required to pass it to
graduate. Students will not be certified by the state until they pass
Praxis II, so they should plan to retake in the Spring 2006 towards
passing state standards.
Students doing their internship in Spring 2006 must submit proof
of taking or scheduling Praxis II with their application to
student teaching. If they do not pass, they must continue to take the
test during student teaching to work towards certification requirements
by the state. Students will not be certified by the state until they
pass Praxis II.
Students doing their internship beginning Fall 2006 will be
required to pass Praxis II before student teaching.
