"The Certified Athletic Trainer is a
highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health
care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personal,
the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team
in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine
clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic health care
settings."
– The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
Athletic Training at a Glance
Athletic training is an allied healthcare profession recognized by the
American Medical Association. Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) hold
a bachelor’s degree, with more than 70 percent earning an advanced
degree. ATCs are required to pursue continuing education to retain board
certification.
Certified Athletic Trainers are:
• Experts in injury prevention,
assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, particularly in the orthopedic
and musculoskeletal disciplines. They are often the first to respond to
an injury.
• A key component of the health care
team, which includes physicians and other specialized personnel. Because
of their focus on injury prevention and rehabilitation, ATCs lessen the
burden on the public and private health care systems.
• Multi-skilled health care providers
with strong academic and professional backgrounds. ATCs differ from
personal and fitness trainers who concentrate on physical conditioning
and exercise.
Athletic Training at UMaine
Athletic
training at UMaine is an intensive curriculum and clinical-based program
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
The rigorous standards set by the CAATE ensure graduates from accredited
programs nationwide have consistent high-quality academic and clinical
experiences. UMaine graduates will earn a Bachelor of Science degree
in Athletic Training from the College of Education and Human Development
and be eligible to apply for the NATA Board of Certification Athletic
Trainer examination.
Mission Statement
The University of Maine Athletic Training Education program shall
