Candidate Proficiencies

The Candidate Proficiencies or expected outcomes for graduates of University of Maine teacher preparation programs are based on the 10 Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and are aligned with Maine’s Learning Results.

• Demonstrates knowledge of the central concepts, tools of inquiry and structures of the disciplines taught.
• Creates learning experiences that make subject matter meaningful to students.
• Integrates concepts, tools of inquiry and structures among the disciplines.
• Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students and curriculum goals.
• Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies.
• Understands and uses appropriate technology.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the diverse ways students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support the intellectual, physical, emotional and social development.
• Creates positive environments that support and encourage student learning.
• Demonstrates ability to support student learning and well-being by engaging students, home, school, colleagues and community.
