The College & Technology

LaptopsThe College of Education and Human Development is committed to seeking out and providing innovative technology in its instruction, research and outreach. College leadership actively initiates and pursues opportunities to deliver the latest technological concepts and services to students, faculty and K-12 schools.

Shibles Hall, the College’s home, is a prototype for the UMaine campus in wireless technology. In 2001, the building was completely wired for wireless, allowing building-wide access to the Internet and other networks for any properly configured portable computer. Faculty and students no longer had to be concerned with finding appropriately wired classrooms or stringing and connecting wires. They can concentrate on teaching and learning with technology, not on circuits and cables.

The College was also a campus leader in offering a Computer Lab in Shibles Hall for students and faculty. In addition to access to Macintosh computers and a variety of multi-media equipment, staff members and graduate assistants are on hand to help students develop, practice and advance skills. The lab also offers adaptive keyboards, voice recognition and specialty software for use with individuals with disabilities. It is open daily and by request for special projects.

"Effective teachers know how and when to use computer technology to further the education of their students. One of the best ways to produce effective teachers is to seamlessly incorporate computers in their own learning. In other words our faculty will be modeling some of the pedagogical strategies that they are talking about."
– Abigail Garthwait, assistant professor, Instructional Technology
