Reading Recovery (RR) in Maine

Reading Recovery in Maine

  • Dr. Marie Clay developed and established this early literacy intervention to reverse the failure cycle in early reading acquisition in a relatively short period of time. Reading Recovery is a national program in New Zealand and has expanded to Australia, the United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Bermuda, and Denmark.
  • The first Teacher Leaders from Maine were trained in the early 1990's at Ohio State University. Since then, the University of Maine has become a training site for both Teacher Leaders and new Reading Recovery teachers.
  • Under the leadership of the University Trainer, Mary Rosser, the University serves as a Training Center for Maine and provides initial and ongoing professional development for teacher leaders from around the state. Currently the state of Maine team has 6 consortia in place through out the state with close to 200 trained Reading Recovery teachers offering early interventions to over 5,000 first grade students.
  • Many schools in Maine incorporate Reading Recovery as an essential component in their Response to Intervention model.
