Education
and human development are demanding and rewarding fields of study
and practice. As educators and leaders in a variety of professions,
our graduates pursue careers that help shape the future and well
being of children, adults, families, schools and communities.
The University of Maine and this college
together provide extensive liberal arts and cultural offerings, a
thorough grounding in professional theory and practice, exposure to the
latest research and trends, and highly relevant internships and field
experiences. Our students experience a strong connection to the
realities of their chosen field and are on track for exciting academic,

About the College of Education and Human
Development
The college offers four-year Bachelor
of Science degrees in elementary, secondary and physical education;
early childhood education; and child development and family relations.
Minors
in education, child development and family studies, and
exercise science
are available for UMaine students majoring in other disciplines.
Graduate study
is offered at the master's (Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of
Education, Master of Science), Certificate of Advanced Study and
doctoral (Ed.D.) levels. Program areas include: teacher education in
elementary, middle level, secondary, science and social studies
education; literacy; counselor education; PreK-12 educational
leadership; higher education; kinesiology and physical education;
instructional technology; special education; and an individually
designed doctorate. The M.S. in human development focuses on family and
individual change throughout the life span.
Special Units
The College’s teaching and research
generate solutions and innovative approaches to school reform and
societal issues statewide and nationally, stimulate scholarship for
graduate students and enrich the undergraduate program through the
exploration of ideas and exposure to the creation and application of new

The Student Body
The college has an enrollment of approximately
900 undergraduates and 800 graduate students. Within the broad offerings
and experiences of the college and university, students find many opportunities
for personal and professional growth, to work closely with faculty on special
projects and research, to learn highly specialized skills, and to meet
leaders in their field at various activities on and off campus.
While the majority of students are from
the Northeast, others represent states across the country, as well as
several other nations. The college encourages international study and
provides student teaching opportunities in countries such as England,
Ireland Canada and Australia.
