ACC Network Overview
The ACC Network was co-founded by Kathy and Gary
Schilmoeller in 1989 in response to the lack of information available to understand
and help their son, Matthew, who has ACC. From the beginning, the goal of the
ACC Network has been to assist families and professionals to communicate about
ACC and other conditions involving the corpus callosum.
Since that time, the ACC Network has grown
from a few like-minded families in the early 1990's to the current network
of more than 5,000 individuals, families, and professionals around the world.
Now located at the University of Maine, the network continues to foster a
community of knowledge and support for individuals and families living with
callosal conditions. In addition, the ACC network team conducts ACC research
and presents information and research findings to a variety of audiences
to further the understanding of callosal disorders among families, professionals,
and service providers.
Services
The ACC Network is available to answer questions
and provide information and support through email and regular mail correspondence
and phone calls. We produce and distribute information packets, newsletters and
other educational materials. The network staff facilitates communication among
families and professionals by maintaining a network directory, the ACC listserv,
and the ACC Network Album.
Research
The ACC Network team conducts
research to develop a behavioral, cognitive and physical phenotype of persons
with ACC and other callosal disorders. They also collaborate with researchers of
disorders of the corpus callosum within and outside the University of Maine and
facilitate in the recruitment of participants for ACC-related research projects.
