The Graduate Symposium, a presentation of academic research by graduate students, faculty and alumni, will be held May 2, 2009. Both events are sponsored by the English Graduate Student Association (EGSA).

October 30: The Society for Utopian Studies 33rd Annual Meeting in Portland
The Society for Utopian Studies 33rd Annual Meeting was held October 30 - November 2, 2008 in Portland, Maine. The meeting featured plenary speaker Jason Read, as well as such UMaine luminaries as Naomi Jacobs (Chair of the English department and noted Utopian writer), Gisela Hoecherl-Alden, Laura Lindenfeld, Tony Brinkley, Jennifer Smith-Mayo, Howard Segal, Michael Grillo, Laurie Hicks, Michael Howard, Dusty Lavoie, Elizabeth Neiman, and our very own graduate students Jason Dodge and Mark Tabone.
The National Poetry Foundation Conference - Poetry of the 1970s - was held June 11 - 15, 2008 at the University of Maine. Featured poets included Bruce Andrews, Rae Armantrout, Nicole Brossard, Clark Coolidge, Jayne Cortez, Ann Lauterbach, Bernadette Mayer, Tom Raworth and Fred Wah.
