Research Associate I or II Position Available

 

The University of Maine’s Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies has a full-time Research Associate I or II position available in Inclusive K-12 education.

 

Appointment as Research Associate I or II is dependent on qualifications and experience.  

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include providing on-site and technology based technical assistance, consultation, and professional development to schools and community and state agencies; engaging in research and evaluation activities; and developing and disseminating materials on state of the art and promising practices.

 

Knowledge and skill qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in education, special education, educational leadership, or related field is required.  Master’s degree is preferred. Significant, relevant experience is required. Position also requires demonstrated experience educating students with a broad range of disabilities in inclusive educational settings. Experience with curricular accommodations, alternate assessment, and differentiated instruction is preferred. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment are essential. Appropriate background checks are required. Position involves extensive statewide travel, normally requiring a valid driver’s license. 

 

Position is a full-time, fiscal year appointment contingent upon external funding and performance.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:                       Research Associate I

DATE:                        January 2008

DEPARTMENT:      Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (CCIDS)

REPORTS TO:        Co-coordinator of Community Services or PI

POSITION TYPE:    Full-time, regular, with reappointment contingent on external funding and successful performance

 

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to research, develop, plan, and provide consultation/technical assistance, professional development, and community education related to community-based services, supports, and policy for children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities.  The employee is also required to assist in materials and grant development as well as project dissemination and evaluation activities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.      Under the direction of the Coordinator and/or PI, the Research Associate I provides on-site and technology based technical assistance, community education, and professional development to early care and education programs, schools, and community and state agencies through mentoring, coaching and collaborative consultation that addresses objectives as outlined in technical assistance/consultation and project plans.

2.      Under the direction of the Coordinator and/or PI, the Research Associate I engages in research and evaluation activities, including data collection and compilation, literature reviews, and basic data analysis related to assigned projects.

3.      Under the direction of the Coordinator and/or PI, the Research Associate I researches, develops and disseminates materials, including monographs, papers, curricula, reports, and grants, on state of the art and emerging best practices.

4.      Performs other reasonably related duties, as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master’s Degree in related field (i.e., early childhood special education, early intervention, early childhood education, special education, educational leadership) is preferred.  A Bachelor’s Degree or combination of four years of education and experience, equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, and significant (typically three to five additional years) demonstrated experience in related field are required.  The position requires excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others, including faculty, staff, individuals with disabilities, family members, and policy makers in the development of materials, teaching, technical assistance, and research and evaluation activities. Ability to travel, typically requiring a valid driver’s license.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENTS / DYNAMICS:

            The Research Associate I is a professional position with a high degree of variability, even on a daily basis.  Work is governed by broad instructions and objectives usually involving frequently changing conditions and problems requiring judgment, initiative, creativity, and/or ingenuity.  Work plans often involve “emerging best practice” requiring the RA I to be constantly involved in researching, examining, and new learning as well as having excellent interpersonal and communication skills. In state and occasional out of state travel is required in order to perform the essential functions of this position.  Additionally, s/he interacts with the University and CCIDS staff and students, educators, state agency partners, parents, family members, policy makers, and community agencies and members, and responds to requests for information, technical assistance and support.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies’ normal office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 p.m.  However, work beyond regular hours (to include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position.

 

WORK YEAR:          Full-time, 12 months.

 

SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION: Conducted by the Coordinator, every nine months during the probationary period, annually thereafter, in accordance with UMPSA agreement and the Center’s Peer Review Process.

 

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE:  Salary Band 2

 

The finalist for this position must successfully complete DHHS Background and Driver’s License checks.
