Senior Development Officer
The University of Maine is seeking an experienced Senior Development Officer. The SDO will be instrumental in developing external relationships on behalf of the University of Maine with alumni and friends to secure private funding through major and planned giving. The SDO will work with all campus fundraising units within the University’s fundraising structure to cultivate, solicit and steward donors for the University of Maine’s $150 million comprehensive campaign.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and significant related experience, demonstrated success in managing a portfolio of individual, major and planned giving prospects and success in personal donor solicitation, preferably with experience in a university environment.

Purpose: The Senior Development Officer is instrumental in developing external relationships on behalf of the University of Maine with alumni and friends to secure private funding through major and planned giving. This development professional will work with all campus fundraising units within the University’s decentralized fundraising structure to cultivate, solicit and steward donors for the University of Maine with a specific focus on funding for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage a portfolio of 125 to 150 major and planned giving prospects. Provide consistent cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship through personal visits, telephone calls, written proposals and other communications for University priority projects.
Work closely with the Director of Major Gifts, the Dean of CLAS, the Presidents of the University of Maine Foundation and Alumni Association, and other university staff to ensure full integration and coordination with all campus development activities.
Work directly with the Director of Major Gifts in setting and achieving personal annual goals. The Senior Development Officer will also assist with establishing annual team goals for the Office of University Development.
Coordinate University of Maine fundraising priority projects and plan cultivation events as assigned, and perform other reasonably related duties as needed.
Knowledge & Skill Qualifications:
Typically has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven years fundraising experience, preferably with in a university environment, is required.
Demonstrated success personally soliciting gifts of $100,000 and above.
A track record of portfolio management meeting yearly solicitation goals.
Professional history showcasing ability to meet high (15+) face-to-face monthly prospect visits.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty and staff, prospects and donors.
Excellent organizational skills and successful experience managing events and other complex activities in support of development initiatives.
Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to make effective presentations to small and large groups.
Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects and others.
Ability to conduct research and assemble data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate and timely reports and other documents to support development activities.
Ability and desire to work as a team-player.
Ability to travel normally requiring a driver’s license.
Work Environment: The position will be located at Heritage House in the Office of University Development. The duties of this position will involve extensive overnight travel and frequent evening and weekend work. There is significant pressure for success based on fundraising goals/expectations and constant donor stewardship.
Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) will be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours, and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.
Position Type: On-going, base budgeted.
Schedule of Evaluation: In accordance with UMPSA agreement.
Salary Range: $50,983 – 84,973
The finalist for this position must successfully complete driver’s license, credit and State Bureau of Identification background checks.
