Biomedical Engineering Laboratory Associate

JOB DESCRIPTION

                        Title:     Laboratory Associate

                        Dept:    Mechanical Engineering

                        Date:    October 22, 2007

                        Reports to:        Mechanical Engineering Department Chair

PURPOSE: Incumbent will assist the ME Chair in acquiring equipment, instruments, robots and materials and supplies to establish Biomedical Engineering Laboratories over a period oftwo years and partially manage the day-to-day operations of the Mechanical Engineering Biomedical Engineering Laboratories, and support the teaching and research missions of the department in the Biomedical Engineering laboratory.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Assist the ME Chair in finding and purchasing suitable items such as equipment, instruments, special tools and glassware, fume hoods, cabinets and counter tops and other items needed to establish a new laboratory within the ME department.

·         Assist the ME chair to develop policies and protocols for non-teaching uses ofthe labs, and administer those policies and protocols.

·         Support biomedical engineering faculty in the development and implementation of teaching modules.

·         Supervise student lab assistants, including safety and environmental management oversight.

·         Reasonably related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education typically associated with a Masters degree (M.Sc. or MBA) and one to five (1-5) years specific training as a wet/chemical engineering laboratories technician. Experience with general wet laboratory operations and safety standards, chemical hygiene plans, and hazardous communication protocols are also desired.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Person will supervise 2-4 part time student aides, who will assist with routine laboratory maintenance tasks.

POSITION TYPE: Position is initially for two years. Depending on the availability of funds within the department or college and the expressed interest of the person, the position may be extended for another two years, contingent on funding and satisfactory performance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/DYNAMICS:Person will be actively engaged in a diverse and active program in an engineering laboratory. In addition to specific duties listed above, person may become involved in special projects related to biomedical engineering laboratory improvement and curricular development.

 

WORK YEAR: The position is a 12-month year appointment.

WORK SCHEDULE: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Work beyond regular hours (to include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to fulfill the requirements of the position.

SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION: In accordance with UMPSA agreement.

SALARY BAND: 3

The Finalist for this position will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.
