Systems Manager
Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research
The University of Maine invites applications for a professional position of Systems Manager, at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research, located in Franklin, Maine. Incumbent will be responsible for the continual operation of freshwater and seawater recirculating and flow-through culture systems and all associated support systems at the University’s Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin, Maine. The Systems Manager will also be required to assist in design and construction of new aquaculture systems, develop and implement a facility wide maintenance program, provide technical support for various projects at the Center and assist with implementation of safety programs and training.
The successful applicant will require a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent in education, training and experience with a minimum of 3 years experience involving systems management of industrial scale farming, manufacturing or processing facilities such as aquaculture production facilities, waste water treatment plants or paper mills. Experience with Building Automation Systems will be an advantage. Must be able to work as part of a team and communicate well with the public. This full-time, fiscal year position offers a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications within the range of $35,000 to $55,000. Renewal is contingent on ongoing funding and job performance. Position Type: Full Time professional. Renewal is contingent on receipt of external funding and successful job performance.
Purpose: Incumbent will be responsible for the continual operation of freshwater and seawater recirculating and flow-through culture systems and all associated support systems at the University’s Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin, Maine.
Essential Functions:
Operates and maintains all existing systems (including generators, wells, pumps, chillers, biofilters, mechanical filters, compressed air/gas and associated electrical and plumbing) in fully functional condition and at maximal biological efficiency.
Designs, installs, programs/configures monitoring and control systems including Building Automation Systems.
Assists in design and construction of new aquatic culture facilities that are engineered to maintain optimum environmental conditions for a variety of freshwater and marine organisms.
Provides technical support for research projects.
Assists in design and implementation of safety related plans pertaining to the facility in conjunction with the CCAR Safety Officer.
Assists the Safety Officer in coordination of environmental health and safety procedures, training, and maintenance of safety equipment.
The systems manager will be familiar with building and electrical codes; NFPA, BOCA, NEC and ensure that all facilities meet relevant standards.
The systems manager will be responsible for establishing, maintaining and updating equipment maintenance schedules and logs for the facility.
The systems manager will maintain and update facility plans, blueprints, wiring and plumbing schematics, equipment cut sheets, manuals, instructional materials and performance records.
The systems manager will liaise with construction and service contractors.
Assists with alarm call-out duties.
Conducts tours of center.

Employee may supervise research assistants temporary and part-time employees and students.

Work Environment/Dynamics:
Position based at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research, in Franklin, Maine. Requires regular heavy lifting not to exceed 75 lbs. And use of ladders over ten feet high. There will occasionally be noise associated with machinery and dust and odors related to construction, but exposure to these will be intermittent and of short duration. There may be some odor associated with the fish and feed maintained at the Center, but this will be rare and of short duration. Incumbent will be on call 24 hours per day (to be shared with other staff). Incumbent will have to react quickly and decisively to equipment malfunction.
Work Schedule:
Regular University of Maine work schedule. Shared on call duties will be necessary (to include nights, weekends and holidays) in order to provide coverage for emergency situations and to meet the requirements of the position. The employee will establish regular office hours and in consultation with the Director and will adjust the work schedule as necessary.
Work Year: Full-time fiscal year.
Schedule for Evaluation: The first evaluation will occur within 6 months of hire, with subsequent evaluations on a yearly basis.
Salary Range: Commensurate with education and experience.
The finalist for this position must successfully complete a driver's license background check and pre-employment physical.
