UMaine Engineers Without Borders (UM-EWB) is a new student chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA). This organization is open to all UM students and community members who are interested in sustainability and working with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life.
EWB-USA's mission is to "partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students."
EWB-USA:
- Brings engineering students and faculty together with professional engineers to work on sustainable development projects around the world.
- Does not support projects with military implications or having solely commercial, religious, or political objectives.
- Aims to use culturally-appropriate technology and to preserve the indigenous wisdom of the communities involved in a project.

Our Mission/Vision :
Traditionally engineers are problem solvers who have sought the cheapest and easiest workable solution to a problem. We believe that we have the capability to be responsible, and that the cheapest and easiest solution is not always the best. We must learn to evaluate solutions with respect to their ecological and cultural impact. We envision UMaine Engineers Without Borders as a catalyst in the local and global transition to a sustainable culturally-conscious world
