Previous Research & Positions Held:
From 1990-1998, I developed and led
the Vegetation Management Alternatives
Program (VMAP) at the Ontario Forest Research Institute. The VMAP
studied alternatives to aerially-applied herbicides, documented the ecological
effects of vegetation management practices, and increased understanding about
ecosystem dynamics in young forests.
I have been
principal investigator of studies examining interference among forest plants,
vegetation dynamics and succession, vegetation management alternatives,
ecophysiology, and the ecological effects of silvicultural practices. I also
have been
co-investigator of research projects involving forest modeling, expert systems,
effects of vegetation management on small mammals, and a study of public
attitudes and perceptions about forestry issues.
From
1981-89, I
was Assistant Director of the CRAFTS (Coordinated Research on Alternative
Forestry Treatments and Systems) cooperative at Oregon State University. As part
of this cooperative, which involved some 20 industrial and government forestry
organizations, I led research projects on plant competition, vegetation
management alternatives, forest modeling, and other silvicultural aspects of
forest regeneration in the Pacific Northwest.
