Occasionally we receive requests from various kinds of organizations asking us to disseminate information about them to our members. In the past, we have generally published such information only when a FLAME member has made a recommendation. At the FLAME Board meeting that took place on Jan. 17, 2007, it was decided to create a special page devoted to information that is potentially of interest to our members--with the understanding that this does not constitute an endorsement by the FLAME Advisory Board.

Kristina Ryberg has retired from Spanish teaching K-12 and has 22 years worth of teaching aids/materials/books/games/realia/posters/etc.  to donate to an enthusiastic beginning teacher who is lacking in the budget area.  It's about 10 boxes.  Catch, have to take it all and you have to come to Bucksport to pick it up.  Is anyone interested?  contact  rybergk@gmail.com

Please click on the thumbnails to get a better view of some samples of the kinds of materials that are being offered.

This is my "Lean Startup"... my attempt to change the way people learn languages, forever.

I'm not a designer, nor am I a programmer (although I took a few first year computer science courses at uni and have always hacked around with websites, since I was 13)... but I taught myself enough to put this together.

The idea was inspired by a Japanese course I took in university. It was the most challenging course I took (even more challenging than Computer Science 115 where my fist assignment was to "design a system to schedule the arrivals and departures at an airport"), because I couldn't just "figure it out": I had to come up with an effective way to learn enough of a language to pass my aural exam at the end of the semester - without distracting from my other courses. My peers had all taken Japanese courses before, and I was stuck not only learning 3 alphabets for the first time, but also how to speak and read them. Repetition and staggered recall worked really well for me, and Populearn is a modern-day incarnation of my "Phrase Book Flash Cads".

Learning languages takes time, and if you are willing to put in some work I can help you. Every week I release new lessons, and I'm working on some pretty cool new features that will be launched soon (so check back often). Inspired by that restaurant with a "set your own price" menu, someday I think I will go with a "Pay what you can" model... so don't worry, Populearn will always be free.

I could go on, but you might as well just try out a few lessons yourself?

Part of a review of Presente / NECTFL Journal, forthcoming / Eileen Angelini

Presente does more than make it easy for teachers to incorporate the Culture standard of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.  It promotes a positive view of other cultures so that students move beyond cultural stereotypes. Moreover, since the research for the oral presentations on cultural themes is based on the Internet, Presente fulfills the educational objective of having students use technology in meaningful ways.

In conclusion, finding a rich variety of subjects to motivate in their work is one of the teachers’ greatest challenges.  It is thus that Presente becomes a time-saving resource that integrates technology and addresses the wide range of personal interests of the students.  No matter what the background or interests of the students, given the breath of topics provided in Presente, each and every one should be able to find a cultural theme to his/her liking.  A preview on the Miraflores’ website is available for every presentation topic.  Furthermore, if a potential adopter of Presente is not comfortable downloading materials from a website, Miraflores will send them directly to a teacher’s email box.

The Language Travel Company specializes in organizing Italian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Greek, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic language immersion programs for students of all levels and ages in carefully chosen study locations across the world.

Our language schools are all fully accredited and offer the highest standards of teaching, and excellent facilities in carefully chosen study locations across the world. Many of our programs qualify for the transfer of academic credit and also offer full cultural programs to compliment our student's language learning.

In addition to this, all members of our advisory team, including myself, are language graduates who have a great deal of personal experience in studying abroad. Our work is based on a genuine enthusiasm for wonderful experiences of living and learning languages in the country where they are spoken! We are always happy to help students decide which course and which location (we visit all of our schools personally) will best suit the needs of the individual, as well give them real advice on what to expect when they study abroad.

This web site -- http://www.makebeliefscomix.com -- allows children and adults to create their own comic strips.  They can select from 15 fun characters with different moods  -- happy, sad, angry, worried – and write words for  blank talk and thought balloons to make their characters talk and think.  There also are story ideas and prompts to help users create graphic stories.

This site can be used by educators to teach language, reading and writing skills, and also for students in English-as-a-Second-Language programs to facilitate self-expression and storytelling, as well as computer literacy.  It is now being used in 160 countries by educators. Some educational therapists use it with deaf and autistic people to help them understand concepts and communicate.  Parents and children can create stories together, print them to create comic books or email them to friends and family.  Others will find the site a resource to be creative, calm down and have fun.

Because so many Spanish-speaking users asked us for the ability to write their cartoons in Spanish as well as in English, we recently upgraded the site to accept words written in Spanish, including appropriate accent marks. This can be a useful tool for someone who is learning Spanish as well as someone whose first language is Spanish.   This feature is being expanded to other  languages, such as French, Italian and German.

I am hoping that you will share http://www.makebeliefscomix.com  with your colleagues, teachers, students or readers of your publications and resource lists.  The site is free with no advertising.  Any help you might offer in getting word out about this project is very appreciated.

If you can suggest other people or groups whom I might contact to make them aware of the site please send me their names, email addresses or phone numbers.  Any list-servs I might join?  Relevant Internet resource sharing groups would be helpful, too.  It takes a community to build a useful resource like this one.

As one who learned to read with comic books, I know that creating comic strips can help people tap into their creativity and practice their language and storytelling skills.  The site is free and stems from my lifelong mission to create resources that help people find their voice and express themselves. The concept for makebeliefscomix.com  is derived from my earlier books, Make Beliefs and Make Beliefs for Kids of All Ages (which can be found on my other web site:
http://www.billztreasurechest.com).  A Make Beliefs interactive feature appeared for 13 years on my syndicated Student Briefing Page for Newsday, and in National Geographic’s World Magazine.

I am Sylvie Reeves, a French national married to an Englishman. After 6 years living and working in England, we settled down in France in 1987. I was head of the Language Centre of the Saumur Chamber of Commerce and Industry for nearly twenty years until I decided to do my own thing and registered my small business in December 2006.

My wish is to share our quality of life with the international francophiles who love culture, history, heritage, gastronomy and fine wines and local savoir- faire du terroir, offering them 101 ways to improve their level of French ,  either by intensive residential courses for those living abroad or by traditional weekly classes or theme workshops for the Loire Valley residents. We are also in the process of renovating part of our property, due to open as a self-catering accommodation in June this year.

We live down the road from The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. I have resorted to the dynamism and savoir-faire of a nutshell of professionals who really want to make sure Fontevraud and its inhabitants will be remembered as a once in a lifetime experience. Richard the enlumineur, Michel the upholsterer, Einav the jewellery maker, Fabrice, master chef in La Licorne just opposite my house.. all of us strive for a convivial fruitful exchange with visitors from all over the world... making them share the secrets of our cultural heritage.
