PURPOSE |
In an effort to
provide networking for language teachers, several regional foreign language
collaboratives were established in the 80's. At that time, most members were
high school teachers, and each collaborative operated independently and with
different philosophies as to meeting structure and focus.
As high school language departments expanded, faculty gained more experience
and more obligations, and with the ease of electronic communications, many
collaboratives became inactive.
Language instructors in areas of the state of Maine who might be interested
in forming or re-organizing a language collaborative are encouraged to
contact Janice Clain

Penobscot collaborative has not only
remained active, it has increased membership and attendance at monthly
meetings. With the growth of elementary and middle school programs, the
collaborative has provided an opportunity for teachers who are new to the
profession, or to language teaching, to share instructional and assessment
strategies. With commercial materials for students in lower grades limited,
collaborative attendees have shared their experiences with creating
activities and lesson plans. Experienced teachers have enjoyed recycling
their own strategies, bring songs, games, listening and speaking activities,
and even classroom management strategies.
Read some of the
motivational strategies their members have compiled to encourage student
participation.
