SECTION 5000                           Amended May 27, 1991

ENDORSEMENT:            FOREIGN LANGUAGE

 

1.            Authorization: Teaches foreign languages from kindergarten through grade 12.

2.            Academic Requirements: Eligibility for this endorsement shall be established by:

A.            Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate program approved for the preparation of foreign language teachers with a major in the foreign language requested for endorsement together with the formal recommendation of the preparing institution

OR

B.            Preparation which includes:

(1)            A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a concentration in liberal arts

(2)            *A major (36 semester hours) in foreign languages with a minimum of 24 semester hours in each language requested for endorsement. A minimum of 15 semester hours must be above the intermediate level in each language area.

*            Beginning level coursework may be documented through examination credit and/or other appropriate documentation.

OR

C.            Preparation which includes:

(1)            A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a concentration in liberal arts

(2)            A score of advanced level or higher in the foreign language requested for endorsement on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) oral Proficiency Interview administered by a certified ACTFL oral proficiency tester.

3.            Professional Requirements:

A minimum of 24 semester hours in the following:

A.            Knowledge of the learner

B.            Knowledge of the learning process

C.            Teaching exceptional students in the regular classroom

D.            Content area methods on teaching foreign language from kindergarten through grade 12.

E.            Curriculum design and methods of program evaluation

*F.            Early and on-going experience or practicum at the elementary level

*G.            Student Teaching: one academic semester or 15 weeks of full time student teaching experience

*            These requirements waived for Conditional level certificate holders.

4.            Renewal Requirements:

            A Professional certificate may be renewed upon completion of 6 hours of approved study. It is recommended that the approved study be in the endorsement area
 

SECTION 5410                                                               Amended: December 21, 1995

 

ENDORSEMENT:            (410)            LATIN

 

1.            Authorization: Teaches Latin from grade K through 12.

2.            Academic Requirements: Eligibility for this endorsement shall be established by:

A.            Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate or master's degree program approved for the education of Latin education teachers with the formal recommendation of the preparing institution.

OR

B.            Preparation which includes:

(1)            A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a concentration in liberal arts

AND

(2)            A major (36 semester hours) in foreign languages with a minimum of 18 semester hours in Latin.

OR

(3)            Eighteen semester hours in Latin

AND

Eighteen semester hours in one or more of the following areas:

(a)            Foreign languages)

(b)            Greek

(c)            Classical literature in translation

(d)            Ancient history or geography

(e)            Ancient political thought

(f)            Archaeology

(g)            Classical philosophy or religion

(h)            Mythology

(i)            Greek or Roman Art

(j)            Art history

(k)            Classical philology or linguistics

3.            Professional Requirements:

A minimum of 24 semester hours in the following:

A.            Knowledge of the learner

B.            Knowledge of the learning process

C.            Teaching exceptional students in the regular classroom

D.            Content area methods

E.            Curriculum design and methods of program evaluation

*F.            Early and on-going experience or practicum

*G.            Student Teaching: One academic semester or 15 weeks of full-time student teaching experience, or a combination of part-time and full-time student teaching in an amount equivalent to 15 weeks.

4.            Renewal Requirements:

A professional certificate may be renewed upon completion of 6 hours of approved study. It is recommended that the approved study be in the endorsement area.

 

SECTION 3000

 

ENDORSEMENT: MIDDLE LEVEL TEACHER                            Effective July 1, 1994

 

1.            Authorization: To teach one of the following endorsement areas, (English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies), or a specific foreign language, from grade 5 through grade 8.

 

2.            Academic Requirements: Eligibility for this endorsement shall be established by:

 

A.            Possession of a valid provisional or professional Maine teaching certificate (K-8, 7-12, or K-12) and

 

B.            (1)            A minimum of 18 semester hours in the 7-12 endorsement area or specific foreign language which corresponds to the endorsement area or specific foreign language for which middle level authorization is sought, provided that for purposes of making this computation semester hours in life science and physical science may be aggregated and must include a minimum of 9 semester hours in life science and 9 semester hours in physical science; and

 

(2)            A minimum of 18 academic semester hours in any other 7-12 endorsement area or any K-12 endorsement area or any other specific foreign language, provided that for purposes of making this computation semester hours in life science and physical science may be aggregated.

 

3.            Professional Requirements:

 

A.            A-minimum of 12 semester hours from the following four areas. Three semester hours must be earned in each area.

 

(1)            Knowledge of the nature and needs of the early adolescent;

 

(2)            Knowledge of middle level philosophy, curriculum, instructional process., and assessment;

 

(3)            Middle level reading and writing across the curriculum;

 

(4)            Knowledge of the advisory/guidance role of the middle level teacher.

 

OR

 

B.            Equivalent training experiences in the four knowledge areas from subsection 3(A) as outlined in Chapter 115, part I, section 21

 

OR

 

                        C.        A combination of subsection 3(A) and subsection 3(B)
