Building Our Common Core: Engaging and Empowering Language Learners

Today’s context in education is focused on literacy redefined through the Common Core State Standards and an emphasis on 21st century skills that include communication, collaboration, critical thinking, information and media literacy, and creativity. How can language educators connect with these goals? Expand content to engage language learners; connect learning with the real world via technology; and provide authentic means for learners to demonstrate how they can use their new language.

Paul Sandrock is the Director of Education for American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). He is the author of numerous publications, including "The Keys to Assessing Language Performance (2010)," the second in ACTFL's popular "Keys" series. He has served as both president and member of ACTFL's Board of Directors. Before joining the  ACTFL staff, Paul was the Assistant Director for the Content and Learning Team at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI). Prior to that position, he served as World Languages Education Consultant at WDPI. In his roles at ACTFL and WDPI, Paul has worked at the local, state, regional, and national levels to help improve curriculum, instruction, assessment, and program design for world languages. Paul led the training on standards-based instruction and assessment at the 2012 FLAME/ME Department of Education Summer Institute held in June.
