2009 FLAME CONFERENCE Mark your calendars! You do NOT want to miss the 2009 FLAME Conference!! When: March 12-13 2009 Where: Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland We are pleased to announce that John De Mado will be the keynote speaker at the annual FLAME conference on March 12. KEYNOTE ADDRESS Enhancing Language Acquisition by Increasing Esprit de ‘CORE’ Five questions recurrently complicate our profession: · Is it possible to ‘master’ a language? · Is IQ a prerequisite for successful language acquisition? · Are there personality traits that can enhance language acquisition? · Are languages imitated or self-selected? · Is ‘ideal bilingualism’ the goal of ESL instruction? Methodology alone will not suffice to minimize the philosophical differences between and among language teachers. Only the establishment of departmental “organizing principles” can facilitate their resolution. During this keynote address, teachers will consider specific suggestions and strategies to restructure and reinvent their departments to meet the challenges of both the Standards for Foreign Language Learning and the ESL Standards for Pre-K through 12 Students. Be prepared to laugh heartily and to reflect profoundly. ‘Sense of humor’ and ‘capacity for tangential thought’ will be screened at the door. WORKSHOP: Function-al Raps: A MUST for the 21st Century Toolbox How do we create inclusionary activities for large classes and heterogeneous grouping?... Activities that allow us to differentiate our expectations for student performance?… Activities that can be inserted into our curriculum mapping plans?... Activities that really lead to language acquisition?... This highly interactive workshop fuses language acquisition with ‘rap’. Through music, handouts and laughter, teachers learn how to acquire the prerequisite background instrumentals (original sound tracks, sans lyrics) from the Internet, create and then perform ‘raps’ based upon specific language functions appropriate to novice, intermediate and pre-advanced levels. Guaranteed to inject excitement into the classroom and to jumpstart vocabulary, these activities will be ready for usage with students on Monday morning!
