It was wonderful to see so many colleagues. Several teachers couldn’t attend but are interested in FLOW.  Topics discussed:

bulletYear of Languages (federal declaration). See ACTFL web site--link can be found on front page of the FLAME website.
bulletAssessment workshop for the state will be August 7-9
bulletAdvocacy video is being made by FLAME: to promote language learning in Maine.
bulletJanice Clain shared with us what the Penobscot collaborative has discussed:

Middle schools with laptops; motivating students; assessment; TPR and TPRS versus grammar; AP exams; games, textbooks, resources. Teachers bring resources themselves and share information.

Janice also noted that elementary and middle school teachers need the most help because of lack of materials available. They meet in one location.

Other topics suggested:

·        Articulation K-16.

·        Overseas travel.

·        Sharing created materials

·        Getting materials from the internet.

·        TPRS: have someone who uses TPRS demonstrate how mini-stories are created.

·        Culture

·        Language day at UMF? Similar to immersion at Penobscot School.

Chris Gram and Paula Swenson volunteered to co-chair FLOW for next year.

Our first meeting will be Wednesday September 22 at 4pm in LRC at UMF (Room 5).

Sylvie Charron will bring refreshments. Topic of first meeting will be the year of languages and some information sharing about the state document on assessment. Our second meeting will be on assessment.

Respectfully submitted,

Sylvie Charron
