MODERN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

IN MAINE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS

2003 - 2004

Ø      31% of Maine’s total K-8 student population is enrolled in one or more language programs.  This represents no significant change from the previous school year.

Ø      54% of Maine’s total 9-12 student population is enrolled in one or more language programs.  This represents a 1% increase from the previous school year.

Ø      38.75% of Maine’s total K-12 student population is enrolled in one or more language programs.  This represents no significant change from the previous school year.

Ø      32% (178 public and 33 private) of all elementary schools (667) offer exploratory and/or sequential instruction in one or more languages.  This represents a 2% decrease from the previous school year. 

N. B. According to Maine Statute, an elementary school means that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of kindergarten through grade 8.

Ø      100% of all secondary schools offer at least one two-year sequence in a modern or classical language.
