An Oral Historian's Work
With University of Maine Folklore Professor

Edward D. (Sandy) Ives

An Oral Historian's Work image

"Oral History is not some kind of instant history. There's a lot of hard work connected with it, but it can get you information you couldn't get any other way. It can be exciting and tremendously rewarding, putting us in touch with people for whom what we call history was the stuff of daily life."

Edward D. (Sandy) Ives

Learn the Nuts and Bolts of Oral History from a Leading Authority in the Field.

You will accompany Professor Ives through a series of tape-recorded interviews with woodsmen and river drivers who worked in the Maine woods in the 1920s. Watching this oral history project unfold, you will learn the techniques Professor Ives has refined in thirty years of work in the field.

An Oral Historian's Work explains and demonstrates all you need to know to complete a successful oral history project. Whether your interest is folklore, local history, business history, orgenealogy, the basics are the same. This tape will take you step by step through each phase; from evaluating your equipment to conducting pre-interview research. Professor Ives gives suggestions on making contact with informants, getting the most out of each interview, preparing transcripts, and preserving your work for future use.

This tape has been evaluated by oral historians throughout the United States and Canada and is recommended for use in the classroom and in workshops, as well as by individuals.

33 minutes, color. ($39.95)
