Back to the River: Discovering Bangor’s Roots

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra (BSO), collaborating with other cultural groups from the area, has announced that Bangor has been selected as the site for the Continental Harmony project for Maine. The American Composers Forum staff in St. Paul, MN, will work with representatives from the BSO, the Maine Folklife Center, Bangor Region Arts & Cultural Council, Bangor Public Library, Robinson Ballet, the Oratorio Society, Bangor Band and others in selecting a composer who will spend a six week residency in the Bangor region to compose a piece of music for the BSO to perform. This orchestral work will be based on the theme, Back to the River: Discovering Bangor’s Roots, and is targeted for a world premier in the late summer/early fall of 2004, possibly in the new waterfront Amphitheater.

Twenty-nine composers from across the country have applied and a committee from the cultural organizations will choose their top three choices by years’ end. More information will be made available as plans develop and the composer is named, as well as an announcement from the national level sometime in the near future. To learn more, visit:
