Table of Contents

Northeast Folklore Volume XXXVII: Featuring the Writing of Penobscot Entertainer Molly Spotted Elk.

Molly wrote a series of legends based on stories she had been told as a child by Hemlock Joe. She also prepared a word list of Penobscot with both English and French glosses. Molly’s daughter, Jean Archambaud Moore has authorized the Maine Folklife Center to prepare these materials for publication, and Bunny McBride, who wrote her biography, Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris (University of Oklahoma Press, 1995) will prepare a preface for the book.

The editor will prepare some explanatory notes where necessary, but the presentation will be kept true to the original intent of the writer.

- Pauleena MacDougall
