Women's Work: A Century of Maine Experience

Leial Horr and Leon Horr, Jr. imageLeila Horr and Leon Horr, Jr. on Cheabeague Island, Casco Bay, Maine. In any work they did, whether for the maintenance of the home or to help their husbands, women generally had to interrupt in order to care for the children, as in this picture. Childcare was also in itself a way to aid in a husband's work, in that if women were looking after the children, men could concentrate on other things, like lobstering. [P 445]
