Chapter 4 - Map of Maine Paper Mills

Decorative letter In 2006, the pulp and paper mills currently operating in Maine are located in Madawaska, Woodland, Millinocket, East Millinocket, Lincoln, Old Town, Madison, Skowhegan, Bucksport, Jay, Rumford, Somerset and Westbrook.

  • Madawaska
    Fraser Papers, Inc.
    Fraser produces coated and fine papers, bond, books, catalogues and specialty papers. There are eight paper machines producing 1300 tons of paper per day.
  • Millinocket and East Millinocket
    Katahdin Paper Company (formerly Great Northern Paper)
    Millinocket and East Millinocket are home to the Katahdin Paper Company, purchased out of bankruptcy in April 2003 by Brascan Financial Group. East Millinocket produces directory and newsprint paper on two paper machines; ground wood pulp, and recycled pulp. Millinocket produces 500 tons per day of super-calendered papers on one paper machine.
  • Lincoln
    Lincoln Paper and Tissue LLC.
    Lincoln produces 450 tons per day of Kraft and recycled pulp, 210 tons of specialty paper and 100 tons of tissue on two paper machines.
  • Old Town
    Georgia-Pacific Corporation
    Old Town, run by Georgia Pacific is currently under negotiation to be purchased; all employees are out of work.

  • Skowhegan
    Sappi Fine Paper
    Skowhegan and Westbrook are home to Sappi Fine Paper, making 1500 tons of pulp per day and 2,500 tons of paper on five machines.
  • Brewer
    Eastern Fine Paper
    Eastern Fine Paper in Brewer closed in 2003, the mill remains empty.

  • Rumford
    Rumford is home to Mead Westvaco which has four paper machines making 1600 tons of paper per day. They also make 125 tons/day of ground wood and 1,075 tons of Kraft pulp.
  • Jay
    International Paper
    Jay is home to both International Paper and Wasau Paper—Wasau makes pressure sensitive backing papers, imaging and other specialty papers, 200 tons per day on two machines. The Androscoggin mill in Jay has five paper machines making 1600 tons of paper per day.
  • Waterville
    Hollingsworth & Whitney Paper Company, Waterville, Maine
  • Bucksport
    International Paper
    Bucksport and Androscoggin are home to International Paper. Bucksport makes 351 tons of ground wood pulp per day, 1364 tons of paper on four paper machines. Androscoggin makes 25 tons of ground wood pulp, 1200 tons of Kraft pulp, 1800 tons of paper on five machines.
  • Madison
    Madison Paper Industries
    Madison Paper produces 300 tons of ground wood pulp, 750 tons of uncoated ground wood super-calendered printing papers on one machine.

  • Augusta
    American Tissue Co
  • Woodland
    Woodland: Domtar Industries Inc. produces 1100 tons of Kraft pulp per day, and 359 tons of paper on one paper machine.
