Welcome to GLBT Services

The University of Maine affirms and supports its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students,  alumni, faculty, and staff. GLBT Services, a collaborative program within the Division of Student Affairs, is a resource for GLBT students and their allies at UMaine. The staff advises and advocates for students, as well as provides the greater campus community with educational opportunities that raise awareness about GLBT issues and concerns. Offerings include classroom presentations, programs, workshops, trainings, a speakers bureau, printed publications and a resource web site.

Rainbow Resource Center
Located on the first floor of the Memorial Union, across from the Wade Center for Student Leadership, the Rainbow Resource Center features a lending library with a collection of GLBT-related resource books and films available to students, faculty and staff during the academic year. The Center also includes a cozy space for students to read, hold group meetings or relax between classes.

Safe Zone Project
The Safe Zone Project provides GLBT people and their straight allies with a visible means of indicating support for the GLBT community. A Rainbow Resource Spot sticker indicates a “safe space” for people to be themselves. When placed on office doors, residence hall doors and other public spaces, these stickers contribute to the creation and maintenance of a safer campus for all people.

Wilde Stein Alliance
The second oldest GLBT and allied student organization in the nation, Wilde Stein Alliance offers students the opportunity to socialize, develop a support network and educate others. Weekly meetings are open to all students and community members. The group also sponsors UMaine’s annual Coming Out Week in October and Pride Week in April.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Council
The Council advises senior administrators about the concerns and needs of UMaine’s GLBT community. The Council develops and promotes educational programming and awareness for the campus community, advocates for the inclusion of relevant material and approaches in the academic curriculum and provides a forum for discussing the needs of the GLBT community. Members are representatives from all segments of UMaine community – undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, professional and classified staff.

The Trevor Project at 866 4U TREVOR. It’s a 24-hour, national help line for gay and questioning teens. You can learn more about The Trevor Project at their website: thetrevorproject.org.

Angels and Doves is a nationwide anti-bullying non profit organization.

The National Center for Bullying Prevention is helping to promote awareness
and teach effective ways to respond to bullying. You can learn more about

The Matthew Shepard Foundation runs Matthew’s Place, an online community and resource center for LGBTQ youth. The website is matthewsplace.com

GLSEN is also a great organization that is working to eradicate bullying and
