Alliison Melton, Intermedia MFA Student Named an Artist to Watch in 2011

Intermedia MFA graduate student Allison Melton was named by the Bangor Daily News, one of 11 people to watch on the cultural scene in the Bangor area. Melton has organized several public art events including an undergraduate art exhibit that was held in a vacant former hair salon in downtown Bangor. Melton is also a singer in the local band Queen City.

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Student, Travis Wallace receives Libra Future Fund Grant

Travis Wallace, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering student has received a grant award from the Libra Future Fund to support his company Thermoelectric Power Systems LLC. The Libra Future Fund started in 2005, and awards grants to individuals to promote economic development or create job opportunities in Maine. Wallace's company will continue to focus on waste heat recovery through the use of thermoelectric materials
primarily for the marine industry. -
Intermedia MFA student, Allison Melton Creates Tuna Tree to Promote Pantry Project

Tuesday, January 4th Hollywood Slots employees are hosting the second annual Pantry Project kickoff in front of a holiday tree made of more than 3,000 cans by local artist and University of Maine graduate student, Allison Melton. The tree, made primarily of tuna cans will be an excellent boost towards the goal of collecting 12,000 pounds for Eastern Maine pantries.
Companies from Bangor to Machias have teamed up with the Pantry Project, a food gathering program organized by United Way of Eastern Maine (UWEM) to benefit local food pantries. “We’re honored to be able to aid in part of the solution for hunger challenges in Eastern Maine,” said John Kuropchak, United Way of Eastern Maine president. “It’s a great partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank and all
of our participating companies.” Jason Birney, Director of Marketing at Hollywood Slots said, “We couldn’t be more proud to contribute to this great cause in such a creative way. We only hope that this beautiful work of art has assisted in raising awareness and donations to the United Way’s Pantry Project.”

Two Doctoral Students Win National Sea Grant Fellowships
Posted December 8, 2010Doctoral student in Marine Biology Sam Truesdell (at left) and Ecology and Environmental Science doctoral student Peter Hayes have been selected to join the group of Sea Grant/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service Fellows earning doctoral degrees in either fisheries population dynamics or marine resource economics, according to the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program. Sam Truesdell, whose research focuses on the spatial dynamics of fishing fleets, and Peter Hayes, who studies interactions between natural processes and cycles of human behavior and decisions in three Gulf of Maine fisheries, were among only seven graduate students chosen for the fellowship from across the country.
