2008 Expanding Your Horizons Conference: Volunteers Needed
March 6, 2008
Calling all Female Faculty, Staff & Students!
Want to help out at an exciting conference to promote math and science for 7th and 8th grade girls?
On Thursday, March 13th, the Women's Resource Center needs volunteers to be workshop facilitators and guides.
You are not required to be knowledgeable in the math, science and technology fields! This is an opportunity to spend time with girls from the state of Maine, introduce them to a college campus, and engage them in conversations.
Workshop Facilitators: Women from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds are welcome to participate in this part of the program. These workshops are designed to help girls reflect on their own experiences as a girl. Training for facilitators is held prior to the conference and some sample workshops are provided. The sessions last for approx. 45 minutes. A maximum of about 20 girls will be in each group. You can do one workshop, or you can do up to four workshops for different groups. (You commit as much time as you can).
Guides: Women from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds are also welcome to guide. Volunteers should be familiar with the UMaine campus. They will accompany a group with a maximum of 20 girls to workshops, lunch, and on a short tour of the campus. Volunteers are responsible for making sure girls get where they need to go, and they should be prepared to discuss their experiences at the University with their group of girls. Training is provided prior to the conference. (Commitment from 8:00 to 3:00).
