The 2010 Dissertation & Thesis Studio: Call for Applications

This Fall Semester begins, the Graduate School will select 10 applicants to participate in two Dissertation & Thesis Studios at the Graduate Student Center in Stodder Hall.

The core of the Studio is a series of structured collaborative workshops facilitated by members of the graduate faculty with expertise in writing, primarily dedicated to engaging participants in structured peer-review and feedback on works in progress, and especially useful for those dissertators and thesis-writers seeking both practical guidance and supportive colleagues.

The objectives of the Studio are to:

  • Enable progress toward project completion;
  • Provide enhanced writing and revising skills;
  • Build a supportive graduate-student writing community; and to
  • Enhance projects with interdisciplinary perspectives.

As a self-described "reluctant writer" working on a thesis in Spatial Information Science, Avi Rude says that he "got most of my writing done with the help of the Studio."  Lester French, Senior Research Engineer at the Maine Target Technology Center,  writes "the writer's studio was a thoroughly enjoyable and productive process in writing my dissertation...The fact that the readers were not familiar with my research helped me find areas where I was not explaining some technical details clearly or in sufficient detail."

There is no cost for those admitted.  In considering applications, the Graduate School will seek to create the most productive mix of disciplines, needs, and availability.

Please complete the application, save it as a .pdf file titled "Dissertation & Thesis Studio Application" (to avoid any compatibility issues) and send as an attachment to Dylan Dryer (dylan.dryer@umit.maine.edu).  The deadline is Friday, 4:30 pm, August 27, 2010.
