UMaine Graduate Stipends to Increase Again

Graduate Assistant Stipend Increase

We are very pleased to announce that effective Fall 06, the minimum graduate assistantship stipend will again increase from $11,000 to $11,500 for a nine-month academic year appointment. All graduate assistantship positions administered through the Graduate School and all work-study assistantship positions will receive the increase immediately. Any other half-time (20 hrs/week) assistantships which provide compensation at a level that is not equivalent to $11,500 for the academic year should make plans to increase to this level within the next year.

UMaine's Agricultural Doctoral Programs Ranked Nationally

January 16, 2007

Academic Analytics, which ranks graduate programs by faculty scholarly activity in various areas, has rated UMaine’s agronomy and crop sciences number five nationally, trailing only the University of Arizona, Cornell University, the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and the University of California-Davis. Immediately behind UMaine are Purdue University and Penn State University. In the broader area of agricultural sciences, UMaine is ranked ninth. WORKSHOP:  Preparing for Non- Academic Careers: For Graduate Students and Advisors

March 21, 2007 (Wednesday)

This workshop will provide lots of tips and suggestions on everything from researching the non-academic job markets in your field, to writing an effective resume and using your academic experience, to conducting an effective job search.

Topics include: What you should know before you start; planning and timing your search; written materials for the search --- suggestions and samples; and conducting the search.

An important part of this workshop will be discussion-based, so bring your expertise, bring your questions, and join us for a stimulating discussion on the ins and outs of the job search.

Presenters: Patty Counihan is the Director of the UMaine Career Center and a Cooperating Graduate Instructor in the College of Education and Human Development. Jeff Goodman is the Psychology and Social Sciences Liaison at the UMaine Career Center and a Ph.D. candidate in Social Psychology.


WORKSHOP:  Preparing a Piece of Academic Writing for Publication in the Humanities & Social Sciences: For Graduate Students

If you are in masters or doctoral programs planning on careers in the highly competitive fields of the humanities of social sciences, it is useful to get a head start on publishing your work. This workshop will focus on how to go about preparing a piece of academic writing for publication in these fields.

WORKSHOP:  The Teaching Portfolio: A Workshop for Graduate Teaching Assistants

In today's highly competitive academic job market, a teaching portfolio has now become a must have.

This workshop will focus on how to build a teaching portfolio in order to effectively showcase your teaching accomplishments. We will explore how to begin to generate useful items as you teach and engage in professional development activities such as this workshop, as well as how to decide what documents to include in your portfolio (such as student ratings, faculty evaluations, course materials, a philosophy of teaching, a reflection on your development, etc.)

UMaine Graduate Stipends Reach $12,000

We are very pleased to announce that effective Fall 2007, the minimum graduate assistantship stipend will increase from $11,500 to $12,000 for a nine-month academic year appointment. All graduate assistantship positions administered through the Graduate School and all work-study assistantship positions will receive the increase immediately, along with full tuition coverage and 50% of the premium for the university's health insurance plan for graduate assistants. Any other half-time (20 hrs/week) assistantships which provide compensation at a level that is not equivalent to $12,000 for the academic year should make plans to increase to this level within the next year. Twelve-month research appointments should carry a minimum stipend of $15,000.

We wish to thank President Kennedy, Provost Szymanski, Vice President Eckardt, Vice President Waldron, the Graduate Student Government leadership, and the members of the Graduate Board for their efforts on behalf of our graduate student population.

2007 Graduate School Picnic

August 28, 2007

All Graduate Faculty, Graduate Students and their Families, and Support Staff are invited to the annual Graduate School Picnic being held Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.  The picnic will be held at the recreational area by the Stillwater River. 

The rain date for this event is Thursday, September 27th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
