Presidential Graduate Teaching Fellowship Call for Nominations - Due October 13, 2010

For Spring 2011, the Graduate School requests nominations to fill 4 Presidential Teaching Fellowships for UMaine doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive exams and 1 Presidential Teaching Fellowships for a UMaine post-doctoral fellow.

Each pre-doctoral Presidential Teaching Fellow will receive a stipend of $6,500 and one credit of tuition for the Spring 2011 semester; the  post-doctoral Presidential Teaching Fellow will receive a stipend of $7,500.

Each Teaching Fellow will be required to teach one lower division course normally scheduled to be taught by a member of the Graduate Faculty for Spring 2011, and the Graduate Faculty member must agree to teach a graduate course that otherwise would not have been taught; this course can be delivered during any semester from Spring 11 through Spring 12 (inclusive) . We also expect that funding that would have supported the Fellow be passed to another student if at all feasible. All Fellows will be required to attend several teaching workshops to be held during the Fall 2010 semester, run by the Center for Excellence in Teaching Assessment.

Applications are due on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 at 4:30pm EST and should be sent to the Graduate School via email to grad.awards@umit.maine.edu by the nominee's advisor or supervisor. Each application should include:

 The nominee's CV
A letter of nomination from the faculty advisor, with particular attention to the nominee's potential as a college teacher, and a brief statement on the importance of the two courses in the context of the unit's teaching needs
A one-paragraph statement of the nominee's teaching philosophy and the role of college teaching in his or her career aspirations
Name/number of the course to be taught by the Fellow
Name/number and graduate instructor for the graduate course to be taught by the faculty member originally scheduled to teach the undergraduate course

Highly ranked nominees may be asked to interview with the search committee during the third week of October.

Evaluation will be based on: student's record; unit need for the additional teaching and graduate student support; nominee's potential for teaching and the role of teaching in career aspirations; letter of recommendation.
