Joining a Sorority at the Uni= versity of Maine allows members the opportunity to expand their horizons t= hrough leadership, social, and community service programs. Members of the Greek community hold a variety of leadership positions i= n the University = community as well as the Greek community. We have members who are leaders in Student Government= , Campus Activities Board, Alternative Spring Break, Campus Recreation, th= e Student’s Women’s &nbs= p; Associatio= n, among others.

Within each Sorority, there a= re opportunities to become involved in leadership positions. Upper-class c= hapter members often encourage new members to become active in campus leadership roles they have expe= rience how it enriches the college experience. As a result, membership in a Sorority gives you the opportunity t= o develop as an individual. = A leader in the Greek community will develop such skills as goal-setting, delegating responsibil= ities, group = ; dynamics, time management, and decision making. These skills will be useful to So= rority members not only in college, but for the rest of your life. You have the choice to take on as m= uch or as little as you feel comfortable with.

What is Formal Recruitment?

“Formal RecruitmentR= 21; is a week when prospective members visit all six sororities and get ac= quainted with all aspects of sorority life. You will visit each sorority once at the start of the Recr= uitment week. Then, several rounds of indivi= dual events will allow you to get to know individual chapters better. At the conclusion = of each round of events, the Potential New Member will narrow her choices = to which house she wishes to return, and the individual sororities will decide who they wish to = invite back, thereby creating a mutual selection process. Through the Recruitment process, you learn a= bout the individual activities and programs of each sorority and the stand= ards of ideals for which each one stands.= Each sorority has &nbs= p; something wonderful and unique to offer = in return.

By joining a sorority, you ha= ve a tight-knit group of friends who can help you become acquainted to the= University of Maine. Along = with helping members with academics, the Greek community is made up of the= most active individuals on campus and can help you “network.”= In addition to these networ= king skills, you will gain leadership skills and learn to improve your tim= e management, both things that will benefit you in the future, when you en= ter the “real world”.

Is Recruitment only for Freshman?=

No, not at all! Sorority recruitment is for all &nb= sp; undergraduate college women. All college women are encouraged to participate in the r= ecruitment process; so don’t miss out on the experience of joining a= sorority!

Do I have to join a Sorority if I go t= hrough Formal Recruitment?

No, you are under no obligati= on to join a sorority <= /span>because you participate in recruitment. You are &nbs= p; encouraged to participate in recruitment because it is an = excellent opportunity for you to learn about sorority life and meet new fr= iends. Sorority life may not= be for everybody, but sorority formal recruitment definitely is.
