Policy for Use of
The University of Maine Trademarks
Student organizations and groups
often decide to create t-shirts, mugs and other
items which may include the name of their group
along with an official University of Maine
designation. In fact, the University encourages
the utilization of its name and its official
marks. However, it is necessary to control the
use of University trademarks to protect against
liability, copyright infringement, and to assure
quality control. Accordingly, the following
guidelines must be followed whenever lettering or
artwork identifiable with the University is used
in any way.
1. Any individual or group seeking to use
University trademarks must receive prior approval
by the Marketing Department 581-3759. Students can contact
this office with any questions. More information may also
be found on the web at
www.umaine.edu/relations.
2. Only companies licensed by the University or
companies ordering from licensed manufacturers
can be used when purchasing a product containing
a trademark of the University. A complete listing of licensed
companies is available from the Marketing Department.
3. Royalties are normally assessed with
the use of University trademarks for items being sold. Typically
student groups do not pay royalties for the use
of the University trademarks if the items are to be used on
campus by the group and are not being sold. Final determination
will be made during the approval process.
A complete listing of licensed companies is
available from the Director of Marketing at
581-3759. Students can contact the Director of
Marketing with any questions. More information
may also be found on the web at
