FAME Access to Medical
Education Program and Dental Education Program
Since the State of Maine has no
publicly funded health professions schools, the
legislature has authorized FAME (the Finance
Authority of Maine) to enter into access
agreements with certain schools to guarantee a
modest number of seats for qualified Maine
residents.
Medical School
- Participants in the Access
to Medical Education Program are required
to complete a family practice clerkship
at a Maine Family Practice Residency
Program, and to complete a preceptorship
in rural Maine
- The agreement covers any
Maine resident, without regard to the
school where the undergraduate work was
completed
- UMaine students who are
not Maine residents are not covered by
the agreement
- The agreement does not
reduce the tuition at participating
schools
- Students who enroll under
these agreements are covered for a
four-year period. However, new positions
are approved on a biennial basis by the
legislature, and are subject to change or
discontinuation. The Health Professions
Office maintains an up-to-date listing of
the schools and number of seats covered
by the current agreement.
- At this time, the program
provides for 21 seats distributed as
follows:
o Five at Dartmouth College
o Ten at the University of Vermont
o Five at the University of New England
College of Osteopathic Medicine,
o One at Tufts University School of
Veterinary Medicine.
Dental
School
The State of Maine has entered
into an agreement with Dalhousie University in
Nova Scotia. Dalhousie has agreed to hold up to
six seats per year for qualified dental students.
This program is designed to encourage Maine
residents to pursue dental school and become
practicing dentists in the State of Maine.
Students who are not Maine residents should
investigate the opportunities at publicly funded
health professions schools in their home state.
For example, Massachusetts residents should
consider applying to the University of
Massachusetts Medical School, located in
Worcester. State-supported schools generally give
preference in admission to residents of that
state. If your state does not have a public
health professions school, there may be an
agreement with a nearby state that does have such
a school. The Health Professions Office can help
you to determine the circumstances for your home
state.
