When can I move in?

Fall 2012

  • Residence halls open for new and returning students on Friday, August 31, 2012
  • Assignments for new students will be available online after July 1, 2012.

How do I apply for housing?

.

Newly admitted students for Fall 2012:

  • Students who are accepted to UMaine for Fall 2012 will receive a letter with instructions for completing the online housing application. Please complete the online housing application (now available) as soon as you receive instructions from Housing Services. You willl be assigned a room once you have confirmed your enrollment with UMaine. You may then access your room assignment for Fall 2012 after July 1, 2012.

How are room assignments made?

  • First year students - assigned to First Year Experience halls- FYE
  • Returning students - assignments made based on space availability to upperclass halls; preferences from application; generally follows first-received, first-assigned basis
  • UMaine is a tobacco-free campus.
  • Chem-free option available for both first-year and upperclass students
  • All halls offer coed living with single gender sections available upon request      
    • Males: *Androscoggin, Aroostook, *Cumberland, *Gannett, Kennebec, and Penobscot
    • Females:  *Androscoggin, Aroostook, *Cumberland, *Gannett, Hancock, Kennebec and Penobscot Halls.

May I change my meal plan?

Students may change their meal plans once during the first six weeks of each semester. Go to www.umaine.edu/dining for the meal plan change program. If you need a modification to your meal plan for dietary reasons, please click on the information below.

May I request a roommate?
Yes, as long as

  • Mutual requests received from both parties
  • Both online applications received in reasonable proximity to each other
  • Every effort will be made to honor roommate requests
  • Requests for specific assignments are not guaranteed

Do I need property insurance to protect my belongings at UMaine?

Yes. The University of Maine does not provide insurance for personal possessions. All residents are required to have their own property insurance or coverage under the family's homeowner policy.

May I change room/roommates?
Yes, except during a Room Freeze (generally the first and last two weeks of each semester). Please contact your Community Coordinator to request a room change.

If my roommate moves out, may I keep the room to myself?
If you do not have a roommate, you will receive an e-mail from Housing Services with two options - consolidate with another student in your hall who is without a roommate, or "buy out" the room as a double-single for the rest of the semester or academic year. Please refer to current room and board rates for the cost of a double-single.

    • Hart

    • Oak
    • Penobscot
    • York
  • Singles are assigned on a first-received, first assigned basis with priority given to returning students at Room Sign-up in April
  • Room rates are higher for small single room occupancy, single occupancy, or occupying a double room without a roommate
  • Knox, Oxford and Somerset do not have single rooms

What is the difference between residence halls that close for semester/spring break and continuous housing?

  • All halls remain open during October break and Thanksgiving break
  • Semester & Spring Break 2012-2013 - halls that close during semester/spring breaks

  • Students who live in these halls will not have access from
    • 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 until 10:00 a.m. Sunday, January 13, 2013 and from 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 until 10:00 a.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013

  • Continuous Housing Halls do not close for semester/spring breaks.
    • DTAV/Patch Hall - eligible upperclass students
    • Knox - first-year students
    • Stodder - graduate student rooms only
    • York - upperclass students

May I cancel my room assignment before moving in?  May I move out of my residence hall prior to the end of the academic year?

  • Once a room assignment is made, room cancellation fees are in effect
  • The Room and Board License is for the ENTIRE academic year or the remainder of academic year if assigned after opening in the fall
  • Students who cancel after the assignment begins are subject to the Room Cancellation Fee Schedule.

May I have a car on campus?
Yes, students may have cars on campus, although a car is not necessary.

  • A parking decal is required for all cars on campus
  • Decals are available at the Student Service Center in the Memorial Union
  • All lots are designated either for residents, commuters, and faculty/staff
  • Parking is not available for all decals in all lots
  • The 'Bat' bus is free with your MaineCard and offers service between Orono, Old Town, Brewer, and Bangor
  • Black Bear Orono Express provides free transportation from campus to downtown Orono

Yes, students may bring their bikes

Are there banking services on campus?

Yes, there is a full-service Credit Union and two ATM machines on campus. You may want to check with your local bank to see if they have a branch in the Orono-Old Town area.

Package Pickups for Resident Students
All packages mailed to resident students by the USPS or shipped by a private carrier (ex. FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc.) will be picked up at The Cubby, the US Postal Substation at the Memorial Union. Students will receive an email on their maine.edu account to pick up their package. The student will need their MaineCard ID or driver’s license to receive their package at The Cubby.

To ensure quicker delivery, include the 4-digit zip code extension on all mail.
