Who is eligible for on-campus housing?

  • Undergraduate students at least 17 years of age, matriculated in a degree program, and enrolled for a minimum of nine credit hours
  • Graduate students enrolled in University of Maine coursework
  • Undergraduate or graduate students who are not enrolled for the minimum credit hours may request an exception.  Please contact Housing Services at Housing@umerl.maine.edu

When can I move in?

Fall Semester

  • First year students - Friday, August 29, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Returning students - Specific move-in times will be posted
  • The University of Maine cannot make exceptions for individual circumstances for arrivals other than the scheduled move-in times

Spring Semester

  • Residence halls reopen - Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
  • Dinner will be served on Sunday, January 11, 2009

How do I apply for housing?

Newly admitted students - Mid-April and throughout the summer

  • Housing and meal plan information packets sent to newly confirmed students*
  • Includes Logon ID and password to apply online for housing and dining plan
  • Information regarding other Auxiliary Services’ departments included in packet

*Confirmed students are new students who have been officially admitted by the University of Maine Admissions Office and paid all admissions deposits

General Information

  • Room assignments are not guaranteed
  • Assignments made on a space available basis
  • New students will be assigned through the end of June
  • All other students placed on waiting list and assigned on a first received, first assigned basis throughout the summer
  • Once assigned room cancellation fees in effect

How are room assignments made?

  • First year students - assigned based upon First Year Residential Experience - FYRE
  • Returning students - assignments made based on space availability; preferences from application; generally follows first-received, first-assigned basis
  • All halls SMOKE-FREE; smokers paired together (information obtained from application)
  • Chem-free options available
  • All halls offer coed living with single gender sections available upon request      
    • Males: *Androscoggin, Aroostook, *Cumberland, *Gannett, Kennebec, Penobscot, and Stodder
    • Female:  *Androscoggin, *Cumberland, *Gannett, Hancock, and Penobscot Halls.

Can I request a roommate?
Yes, as long as

  • Mutual requests received from both parties
  • Both online applications received in reasonable proximity to each other
  • Every effort will be made to honor roommate requests
  • Requests or specific assignments are not guaranteed

Can I change roommates?
Yes after the room freeze is lifted (the first two weeks of classes)

  • Check with your Community Coordinator regarding room/roommate changes

If my roommate moves out, can I have the room to myself?
Yes, this may be possible

  • Housing Services will contact students occupying a double room without a roommate
  • Room rate will be at a higher rate - see Room and Board Rates
  • This is in effect until the end of the current semester
  • All currents assignments are completed prior to Housing Services granting any requests
  • Students do not have choice of solely occupying double room at double rate
  • Students who do not opt to buy out double room at single room surcharge must consolidate

Can I get a single room?
Yes - there are a limited number of single rooms in most residence halls

  • Small singles are located in
    • Aroostook
    • Cumberland
    • Estabrooke
    • Gannett
    • Kennebec
    • Oak
    • Penobscot
  • Singles assigned on a first-received, first assigned basis with priority given to returning students at Room Sign-up (in April)
  • Room rates are higher for small single room occupancy, single occupancy, or occupying a double room without a roommate
  • Knox, Oxford and Somerset do not have single rooms

What is the difference between residence halls that close for semester/spring break and continuous housing?

  • All halls remain open during October break and Thanksgiving break
  • Semester & Spring Break - halls that close during semester/spring breaks
    • Androscoggin
    • Aroostook
    • Balentine
    • Colvin
    • Cumberland
    • Gannett
    • Hancock
    • Kennebec
    • Oak
    • Oxford
    • Penobscot
    • Somerset
    • Stodder
  • Students who live in these halls will not have access from
    • 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 until 10:00 a.m. Sunday, January 11, 2009
  • Continuous Housing Halls do not close for semester/spring breaks
    • DTAV/Edith Patch Hall
    • Estabrooke
    • Hart
    • Knox

Can I cancel my room assignment before moving in?  Can I move out of my residence hall prior to the end of the academic year?

  • Once a room assignment is made, room cancellation fees are in effect
  • The 2008-2009 Room and Board License is for the ENTIRE academic year or the remainder of academic year if assigned after opening in the fall
  • Students who cancel before July 15, 2008 will be charged a room cancellation fee of $150.00
  • Students who cancel from July 15, 2008 until September 1, 2008 will be charged a room cancellation fee of $500.00
  • Students who cancel after September 1, 2008 please see Cancellation Fee schedule

Can I have a car on campus?
Yes, students may have cars on campus

  • A parking decal is required for all cars on campus
  • Decals are available at the Student Service Center in the Memorial Union
  • All lots are designated either for residents, commuters, and faculty/staff
  • Parking is not available for all decals in all lots
  • A free bus service is offered to Orono, Old Town, and Bangor

Should I bring my bicycle to campus?
Yes, students may bring their bikes

  • Register your bike with Public Safety
  • Use a bike lock
  • Bike racks available in most areas on campus

Are there banking services on campus?

Yes, there is a full-service Credit Union and two ATM machines on campus. You may want to check with your local bank to see if they have a branch in the Orono-Old Town area.
