In addition to University recognized holidays, it is important to accommodate the observance of various religious traditions for those staff who need to be absent for religious holidays throughout the year.  For example, Good Friday falls on April 10, 2009.  Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on September 29, 2008 and continues through sundown October 1, 2008 while Yom Kippur begins at sundown October 8, 2008 and concludes at sundown October 9, 2008. Ramadan starts at sundown on September 1, 2008 and concludes with the start of the three-day holiday of Eid al-Fitr on October 2, 2008. Eid al-Adha is a four-day holiday, starting December 08, 2008.

The University of Maine’s Multicultural calendar is posted on the Diversity page, http://www.umaine.edu/diversity/links.htm.  It includes a broad range of observances and historical events and is intended as a work in progress.  Suggestions for additions to the calendar will be reviewed each semester and the Office of Equal Opportunity will make appropriate revisions.
