Unpaid Leaves
Unpaid leave may be requested when necessary. Refer to your collective
bargaining
agreement or
employee
handbook for more information. Continuation of benefits during an
unpaid leave may be possible with the employee responsible for the costs
of continued benefit coverage.
Benefit Coverage During
Leaves
While an employee is on any paid leave (including disability leave,
annual leave, and compensatory time), benefit coverage continues with no
additional cost to the employee. During an unpaid leave of absence that
qualifies as FMLA leave, health insurance coverage continues on the same
terms as during active employment, with the University and the employee
each paying the customary share of premiums. If the employee is not
eligible for FMLA leave or the employee continues to need unpaid leave
after the maximum twelve week FMLA period, the employee is responsible
for costs of continued benefit coverage.
Pay Coverage During Leaves
Paid
leave leave may be available to employees. Eligible employees accrue
sick leave and vacation time. Sick leave may be used for eligible
absences. Vacation time when available is prearranged with your
supervisor.
Medical Release to Return
to Work
An employee who has been on leave for four weeks or longer due to his or
her own medical condition is required to provide medical documentation
of the employee’s ability to return to work.
Bereavement
The University provides bereavement and/or funeral leave. Employees
should check the specific
collective
bargaining agreement and
handbook
and consult their supervisor for bereavement and/or funeral leave.
Miscellaneous
Leaves
All regular employees who are members of the National Guard or military
reservists are eligible for leave without loss of pay for not more than
two weeks per year when engaged in training authorized by the governor
or under the provisions of the National Defense Act.
Leaves for jury duty and court appearances are specifically outlined in
the appropriate collective bargaining agreements. Regular employees not
covered by a collective bargaining agreement who are called to serve on
a jury involuntarily will be given administrative leave without loss of
pay.
