George Criner
Professor of Resource Economics & Policy
Director, School of Economics

George is the rare person who gets satisfaction from the accomplishments of others. He is always willing to listen, support, and help his colleagues, students, and staff. He is a tireless cheerleader for the University and the School of Economics and its students. He is a forward thinker, looking for creative ways to expand and improve what we offer our students. He treats everyone with genuine respect, and even in stressful situations he is able to maintain his wonderful sense of humor. He oversaw the merger of Resource Economics and Policy and Economics into the School of Economics. He also continues to teach along with his numerous administrative duties as Direct of the School of Economics. He volunteers as a coach for the University Rugby team.

George's boss, Ed Ashworth, Dean of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture commented, "It has been a pleasure to work with George Criner. He is upbeat, creative, and fiercely loyal to the members of his unit. As someone who always maintains a sense of humor, it is no wonder he has succeeded at UMaine! Congratulations on 25 years of service."

Karen Casey, Administrative Assistant for the School of Economics, said “I once read that the definition of ‘Class’ is to have the ability to make people feel absolutely comfortable even when they are completely out of their element. That’s George Criner. I have worked for him for five years and it has been a very good experience for me. I love my job because of the great group of people in this department. The attitude here is positive and we treat each other with respect. We are happy. Imagine that. As a supervisor and colleague, George Criner could not be more understanding, thoughtful or considerate of our needs, both, work-related and personal. He is always pleasant to talk to and never lets the trials and tribulations of his job affect his demeanor. His job has been extremely trying and demanding at times, but he has maintained his ‘Southern Charm’ through it all, and I am proud to say that I work for him. I can say with all honesty that he has never once caused me to feel uncomfortable, judged, mistreated or misunderstood while working for him. I don’t know what his secret is, but he always treats the faculty, our students and his staff with respect. Always. His sense of humor is fantastic and let’s just say – unique. His attitude toward life is great and infectious. We appreciate his energy! There aren’t too many people in this world that wake up in the morning and look forward to coming in to work - but I do. Thank you, George Criner for making my job something to brag about, because I do it all the time!”

George, the University of Maine sincerely thanks you for your dedicated 25 years of service.
